Every dam is different. The Dam Steward works with private property owners to take a closer look at the life in and around their dam, notice areas that may benefit from attention, and make practical improvements to fish habitat, vegetation and the surrounding dam environment over time.
Dam Health Checks
A practical observation of your dam environment, including water appearance, fish activity, vegetation, runoff areas and available habitat. Where conditions allow, underwater GoPro footage is used to observe fish activity and habitat below the surface.
Fish Observation
Theron uses bank-side observations and, where conditions allow, underwater GoPro footage to look at fish activity within the dam. Where a fish appears to be a known pest species, this can be noted for further identification or appropriate management.
Habitat Improvement
Practical help to improve shelter, vegetation and other habitat features that can support native fish and aquatic life. Where native fish stocking is being considered, Theron can help owners look at whether the dam environment appears suitable and identify areas that may benefit from improvement first.
Dam-edge Habitat Improvement
Native planting, filtering vegetation, habitat improvement to create healthier, better-vegetated dam edges and improve the transition between land and water.
Ongoing Dam Stewardship
Annual or seasonal return visits to observe changes in fish activity, vegetation, habitat and visible dam-edge condition, follow up on previous works, and carry out agreed practical maintenance over time.

Theron walks the dam, looks at fish activity, vegetation and habitat and visible dam-edge features, and uses underwater GoPro observation where appropriate.
2. Record
Fish activity, suspected pest species, habitat, vegetation and other visible observations are recorded on your Dam Visit Report.
3. Recommend
You receive clear, practical suggestions based on what Theron observed, with any areas that may require specialist advice clearly identified.
A simple Dam Visit Report and invoice can be left in your mailbox.
4. Improve
Where agreed, Theron can help with practical habitat work, dam-edge planting, appropriate fish management activities and other agreed ecosystem-care tasks.
5. Revisit
For dams that benefit from ongoing care, annual or seasonal visits can help observe changes in fish activity, vegetation and habitat over time, and follow up on previous work.
Meet Theron
The Dam Steward is a small, owner-operated service run by Theron, a lifelong freshwater and native fish enthusiast.
Theron has kept fish and maintained his own ponds for many years, with a particular interest in Australian native fish, healthy aquatic habitats and the wildlife that gathers around them.
After years running an industrial business, retirement gave Theron the opportunity to spend more time on something he has always enjoyed: fish, ponds, waterways and the natural environments around them.
The Dam Steward grew from a simple idea - many acreage owners have a dam, but aren't quite sure what's living in it, how it's doing, or what they could do to make it better.
Theron now brings that longstanding interest to a practical service for private dam owners. He continues to build his knowledge through local Bushcare activities, council workshops and community environmental events, alongside his own hands-on experience caring for freshwater environments.
His approach is deliberately practical: look carefully, record what is happening, make sensible improvements, and care for the dam over time.
The Dam Steward provides practical observation and ecosystem-care only. It is not an ecological consultancy, scientific survey service, engineering service, or structural dam-safety service. Where ecological, water-quality, hydraulic, structural or engineering advice is required, owners may be referred to seek an appropriately qualified professional.

Theron takes a practical look at fish activity, vegetation, habitat, water appearance and visible features around the dam edge, noting areas that may benefit from attention. Underwater GoPro observation may also be used where conditions are suitable.
Theron can observe fish and may be able to identify species where distinguishing features are clearly visible. Some fish will be recorded as suspected or unidentified where there isn't enough detail to identify them confidently. A Dam Health Check is not a comprehensive scientific fish survey.
Where a suspected pest fish is observed, Theron can help you understand the practical next steps and, where appropriate and lawful, assist with pest-fish management. Pest fish are handled in accordance with applicable Queensland requirements.
Potentially. Theron can assist with native fish stocking where suitable and permitted. Before stocking, factors such as the fish already present, habitat, water permanence, intended use of the dam and applicable Queensland requirements should be considered.
Yes. Theron can assist with dam-edge vegetation, filtering plants, habitat improvement and practical planting around the water's edge and surrounding dam environment.
Not necessarily. If access has been arranged in advance, Theron can attend the dam and leave your completed Dam Visit Report and invoice in your mailbox after the visit.
No. The Dam Steward focuses on fish, habitat, vegetation and practical ecosystem care around the dam. Structural safety, wall integrity, seepage, spillway performance and other engineering matters are outside the score of service. If you have concerns about these areas, you should seek advice from a suitably qualified dam engineer or other appropriate professional.
